# Version history

> Learn how automatic saving, automatic and named versions, restoring and conflicts between tabs work.

Folio saves your text as you write and keeps earlier versions of the presentation. You can go back to any of them, and even undo going back.

## Automatic saving

There is no save button. Shortly after you stop typing, the text is sent to the server. The text is saved **even when it has errors**, so your draft is never lost.

The indicator at the top of the editor shows the current state:

| Indicator | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Saved** | Everything you wrote is stored. |
| **Unsaved changes** | There are changes that will be sent in a moment. |
| **Saving…** | The text is being sent. |
| **Could not save — retrying** | Sending failed, for example because you are offline. Folio retries on its own every few seconds. |
| **Version conflict** | The presentation was changed somewhere else. See [Conflicts between tabs and devices](#conflicts-between-tabs-and-devices). |

:::caution
If the indicator shows **Could not save — retrying**, keep the tab open until it goes back to **Saved**.

## The history panel

Click the **Version history** icon at the top of the editor to open the **History** panel in place of the preview. Click the icon again, or **Close history**, to return to the preview.

The panel lists versions from newest to oldest, grouped by day (**Today**, **Yesterday** and earlier dates). Each row shows the time, the version type or name and the presentation title at that moment. Use **Refresh** to reload the list.

Click a version to see its slides. The dots below the preview switch between slides.

### Version types

| Type | When it is created |
| --- | --- |
| **Automatic** | When the presentation is created and then, when saving, if the last automatic version is more than 10 minutes old. Folio keeps the 100 most recent automatic versions; older ones are deleted. |
| **Named** | When you give the current version a name. Named versions are never deleted automatically. |
| **Before restore** | Right before a restore, with the content that existed at that moment. |

## Named versions

Before a big change, keep a named point to return to:

1. Open the history panel.
2. Type a name in the field at the top, such as "Before the review".
3. Click **Save version**.

The named version keeps the content saved at that moment and appears in the list with the name you chose. The name can be up to 140 characters long.

## Restoring a version

1. In the history panel, click the version you want to recover and check its slides.
2. Click **Restore this version**.
3. The button changes to **Confirm restore**. Click it within three seconds to confirm. If you do not, the button goes back to normal and nothing happens.

Before restoring, Folio saves anything pending and creates a **Before restore** version with the current content. If you change your mind, just restore that version to undo the restore.

:::note
Restoring replaces the presentation text, but it does not delete any version from the history.

## Conflicts between tabs and devices

Each save starts from the last version the editor knows about. If the same presentation is changed in another tab or on another device, the next save is not accepted and the indicator shows **Version conflict**. A banner appears at the top of the editor with the message "This presentation was changed somewhere else (another tab or device)." and two options:

| Option | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| **Use the saved version** | Discards your changes in this tab and loads the text saved on the server. |
| **Keep mine** | Saves the text in this tab over the other version. |

Until the conflict is resolved, your changes stay only in this tab and nothing is saved. You also cannot restore versions until the conflict is resolved.

:::tip
If you are not sure which text to keep, copy the editor content before choosing **Use the saved version**.
:::

The project theme is saved the same way, but without conflict control: if two tabs edit the theme at the same time, the last save wins. See [Themes](/docs/en/guides/themes/).
